Comparing The Big Bores

Bullet penetration Tests:

The plywood test was done with a catch box constructed of 12 by12 squares of three quarter plywood with a three quarter inch air space between them. The overall catch box was eight feet in length. Barnes Solids were used in all tests except for the 450 Ackley, which was not able to get to the required 2400 fps due to the length of the bullet and lack of powder space. I know this has been mentioned a few times but it is very important to keep this in mind. The 500-grain Hornady solid was used and you will see the dramatic effect that this bullet design has on penetration. In order to put this in perspective I shot three different types of solids at the same velocity with my 470 Mbogo. I think you’ll find this information very interesting. All of the solids showed straight-line penetration in the plywood penetration test and were recovered in perfect condition. All of the solids fired found their own paths through the plywood layers so no advantage was realized by any shots fired. Penetration test results are listed in the combined penetration test table on page 7. For bullet stabilization and penetration tests go to page 11

The newspaper test was done with soaked newspapers packed very tightly in the same box that was used for the plywood tests. Each section of paper used was submerged in a container of water and opened section by section until complete saturation was reached. A three-quarter square of plywood was nailed in at the twenty-four inch mark, forty-eight in mark and at the sixty-two inch mark. These were to keep the wet newspapers compressed tightly and as a quick check for distance penetrated. The plywood separations also allow a quick check to make sure that the bullets traveled without interference from one another.

The newspaper test was a total failure period. Wet paper was tried and dry paper was tried but whether I tried to put 9 shots or 3 shots into the 12 by 12 area we constantly lost bullets. After lining up the barrel for left/right and up/down a shot into the center of the 12 by 12 area exited the box within the first 28 inches. This was a common occurrence and many of the shots would wonder 4 or 5 inches and follow the track of a previous shot. The paper was changed after every three shots and we still had problems gathering information that would relevant. So the paper test is out. Does anyone need a pick-up truck load of paper?
